    It’s so sad that such a beautiful act of love is being received with so much hate by the very people who claim God is love. If you are worried about accepting culture at the detriment of Jesus life and teaching look no further than the way White Evangelicalism has embraced greed, power, violence, racism, nationalism, authoritarianism, pride, and a whole host of other sins in the name of God. I left evangelicalism because I could not reconcile the Jesus of the Gospels with the beliefs and attitudes of evangelicalism. Trumpism was the final straw as it was just a logical culmination of the history of this uniquely American religious movement. If I die and face Jesus and he tells me I should not have loved and accepted those who society has cast aside, then I will tell him I never knew him and throw myself in the lake of fire. I’m so glad I awoke from that nightmare to embrace the Cosmic Christ whose love is endless, inclusive and unconditional. Thank you Derek Webb and Flamy Grant for your bravery and courageous love.

    Very much enjoying these streams, Derek (even if I have to wait until after work to watch the replays). :) Hard to believe it's been 20 yrs since Mockingbird. First saw you with Caedmon's Call way back in '96 (maybe '97?) when I was working stage crew at the icthus festival in good ol' Wilmore, Ky. I think it was "Somewhere North" that came out a bit later that has always been a personal fav. Music & memories are such lovers, aren't they? Looking forward to hearing more from you in 2025!

    I remember when this came out. I was in Bible college, being shocked at how flimsy the Bible (the foundation of my faith) really was when closely and carefully examined with an open mind and an eye for logic. I was quickly becoming disillusioned with the church as well if only because it occurred to me that all Christians cherry pick, without a doubt, and that there were roughly two groups in that regard: those who were cherry picking with minds towards progressive worldviews and those who cherry picked for conservative/regressive worldviews. And the fact that neither seemed to want to admit that was frustrating. "The bible teaches-" The Bible isn't univocal. At it's most logical the bible teaches us it is not to be trusted. Anyway, this song came out when I was in the throughs of a dying faith and to hear people around me saying this song made them uncomfortable bc of a cuss word...it definitely put the final nail in the coffin of my *evangelical* faith. My journey as a progressive Christian lasted about five more years but this song definitely aided me in escaping the worst form (imho) of American Christianity: the Evangelical branch.

    thank you for this beautiful song and message, Derek! when the hate is overwhelming, love is stronger. people will continue to attack one of the most reviled communities in the name of their twisted love for God; love is still stronger. God loves and rejoices in trans people. God loves and rejoices in queer people. i believe we'll one day look back at queerphobia and transphobia and wonder how earlier generations could be so hateful. it's just like interracial marriage and women being able to work. something that makes perfect sense to those who don't let disgust, fear, and hatred lead their lives.

    This is actually super disgusting. Unless you've decided to abandon truth altogether, you should KNOW that the bible says that homosexuality is stated CLEARLY as sin. We also learn that men were made to be MEN. Anything more than that is an abomination. Maybe you got so caught up in trying to please the world that you forgot that you are called to be not of it. The belief that we can be friendly with the world and their wicked schemes is sin. I pray that you would repent of this progressive apostasy because you clearly don't understand the distinguishing between loving people and accepting their sin. Love is fierce. God CORRECTS those he LOVES like a father corrects his son. A loving father wouldn't watch his son play with poison and encourage it. Shoot, even if you don't repent, know this: there is no middle ground. You're either hot or you're cold. Don't get spit out.

  • @HenryJones-m2i
    @HenryJones-m2i 5 місяців тому

    Many comments here, and lots of confusion. 1st, for those saying "show me where Jesus calls out a specific type of sin in the bible", you've already trampled on Jesus words. He may not have mentioned your pet sin by name, but trying to hide behind games like that means you want your sin, and really don't want God to be your King. Matt 5:17 “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill." The Old Testament spells out specifics. Jesus did not abolish what was written before, but came to fulfill it. Finally, Scripture doesn't support BECOMING sinful, or suggesting you partake of another's sins to save them. A lifeguard doesn't drown themselves to save a drowning swimmer. God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son for our sins, not that we should continue in them, but leave them and cling to Him. If you want a sin, go ahead and do it. But please don't pretend you are a Christian, rather you've created a version of God that doesn't exist.

It’s fascinating to see how ya’ll Christians can be so brutal to each other. Derek’s recent song where be performed dressed in drag drew some really hateful comments. I've been meaning to write this comment for months, but let's just say I've been a little preoccupied. It's a bit of a novel, but bear with me; there's a payoff at the end. I was at the house show you did in Dallas in 2019 (I think), between the release of Fingers Crossed and Targets. Little duplex. Memorial Day weekend. I'd be shocked if you remember this interaction, but I was this tall, blonde, skinny guy that talked to you for a few minutes after the show. I told how I had been a Caedmon's fan back in the day and followed your early career, but eventually lost touch for no particular reason. Years later, and just as inexplicably, you suddenly popped into my head one day. I discovered the Fingers Crossed album just as my own faith had come toppling down. I think quipped something about how "Stop Listening" was when I started listening again. It was also just weeks before that house show in my home town (or metroplex, anyway). Of course I had to go. It was one of those weird moments of synchronicity in life; something being in just the right place at just the right time. Fast forward to about a year ago. I didn't catch wind of this video immediately upon release. I was spiraling into a really bad place at the time to the point of checking myself into PHP + IOP for a while. I worked through a lot of stuff. It was all going to be okay. And then literally the day before discharge I had a long conversation with my best friend and stumbled into the second giant existential crisis of my life. CRACK. This one might be even worse than the first. Oh shit. Oh shit shit shit shit shit. I think I might be trans. I mean, there were signs. No one but me could have seen them, but big neon ones. How did I not see this? This can't be happening.... A few weeks later (about 10 months ago) I saw this video and I was... shook. Again. Synchronicity. "Teapots happen" (google that; you won't be disappointed). It's the kind of thing I might have attributed to God working in mysterious ways if that weren't so deeply ironic now. Who knows? Maybe He does. Whatever the reason, I just can't seem to escape from Derek's web. Your guess is as good as mine as to who is stuck to whom. The video might be most directly about drag, but the song speaks to a broader subject than that. It's been in my background for the last 10 months as I ran screaming from this thing in every direction I could think of until I tired myself out and accepted what I really knew from the start. It turns out you can't run from yourself. Thank you for making this.

      @@derekwebb That would be nice. Only, I think maybe this time around I'll skip having a third existential crisis. We _have_ to stop meeting like that 😂 One last thought: I've "doomscrolled" through the comments long enough that I think it's almost wrapped around to a form of comedy. You get this sort of thing on your other videos, of course, but not like this one. And gee, man, I don't know...I'm starting to get the feeling that maybe a whole bunch of these people didn't give a flying fuck who you were, what you're about, or what you said until it was about gender. You put on _one_ little dress and suddenly you're a menace to society. "Little angry men," indeed. You respond to all the kind and positive messages, or even just someone asking for lyrics, so I know you have to be parsing all of this. For a _year_. That's genuinely impressive. I usually feel like social media should do more to clamp down on the rampant hate speech and vitriol leveled at minorities on their platform, but this is different. This needs to be seen. It's an inkblot. Whether you're disgusted by what's above the fold or below it speaks volumes if you can grasp the most basic biblical wisdom of all: "by their fruits, you will know them". Thanks for taking some stones.
