I was introduced to Caedmon’s call by an older coworker and although I am not a Christian or a huge fan of CC’s sound, it seems like Derek Webb is a truly talented and outspoken artist. It’s fascinating to see how ya’ll Christians can be so brutal to each other. Derek’s recent song where be performed dressed in drag drew some really hateful comments. Keep doing what you’re doing Derek. When you get hate, you know you’re hitting the right nerve. Spirituality is more then just rigorously following religious dogma.

I have loved you and Caedmon’s call since junior high. Every song. My senior year, I won a contest singing a duet of “This World.” I’m 39 now! I listened to Bus Driver 2 this morning, CRIED, and shared it with everyone. 😂❤ Thank you for sharing your gift and inspiring the person I am today.

As Christians we are called to follow Christ. He never did or never would do anything like this. This is NOT the way to reach the lost. You don't approve of their immorality to being them to repentance and faith.

I've been meaning to write this comment for months, but let's just say I've been a little preoccupied. It's a bit of a novel, but bear with me; there's a payoff at the end. I was at the house show you did in Dallas in 2019 (I think), between the release of Fingers Crossed and Targets. Little duplex. Memorial Day weekend. I'd be shocked if you remember this interaction, but I was this tall, blonde, skinny guy that talked to you for a few minutes after the show. I told how I had been a Caedmon's fan back in the day and followed your early career, but eventually lost touch for no particular reason. Years later, and just as inexplicably, you suddenly popped into my head one day. I discovered the Fingers Crossed album just as my own faith had come toppling down. I think quipped something about how "Stop Listening" was when I started listening again. It was also just weeks before that house show in my home town (or metroplex, anyway). Of course I had to go. It was one of those weird moments of synchronicity in life; something being in just the right place at just the right time. Fast forward to about a year ago. I didn't catch wind of this video immediately upon release. I was spiraling into a really bad place at the time to the point of checking myself into PHP + IOP for a while. I worked through a lot of stuff. It was all going to be okay. And then literally the day before discharge I had a long conversation with my best friend and stumbled into the second giant existential crisis of my life. CRACK. This one might be even worse than the first. Oh shit. Oh shit shit shit shit shit. I think I might be trans. I mean, there were signs. No one but me could have seen them, but big neon ones. How did I not see this? This can't be happening.... A few weeks later (about 10 months ago) I saw this video and I was... shook. Again. Synchronicity. "Teapots happen" (google that; you won't be disappointed). It's the kind of thing I might have attributed to God working in mysterious ways if that weren't so deeply ironic now. Who knows? Maybe He does. Whatever the reason, I just can't seem to escape from Derek's web. Your guess is as good as mine as to who is stuck to whom. The video might be most directly about drag, but the song speaks to a broader subject than that. It's been in my background for the last 10 months as I ran screaming from this thing in every direction I could think of until I tired myself out and accepted what I really knew from the start. It turns out you can't run from yourself. Thank you for making this.

@@derekwebb That would be nice. Only, I think maybe this time around I'll skip having a third existential crisis. We _have_ to stop meeting like that 😂 One last thought: I've "doomscrolled" through the comments long enough that I think it's almost wrapped around to a form of comedy. You get this sort of thing on your other videos, of course, but not like this one. And gee, man, I don't know...I'm starting to get the feeling that maybe a whole bunch of these people didn't give a flying fuck who you were, what you're about, or what you said until it was about gender. You put on _one_ little dress and suddenly you're a menace to society. "Little angry men," indeed. You respond to all the kind and positive messages, or even just someone asking for lyrics, so I know you have to be parsing all of this. For a _year_. That's genuinely impressive. I usually feel like social media should do more to clamp down on the rampant hate speech and vitriol leveled at minorities on their platform, but this is different. This needs to be seen. It's an inkblot. Whether you're disgusted by what's above the fold or below it speaks volumes if you can grasp the most basic biblical wisdom of all: "by their fruits, you will know them". Thanks for taking some stones.

I’m a member of the church and wow what a song. I felt this. Abuse of power is real everywhere even from those who don’t realize they’re doing it. We hold leaders to high esteem without realizing that they’re imperfect, make mistakes, say stupid stuff, and are sometimes manipulative. I’ve had experiences in the church and on my mission with leaders who use manipulation and their position to get me to do things which have hurt me badly spiritually and emotionally. I forgive them…took a long time. Jesus makes forgiving possible. It’s just sad that the people who are supposed to help and love us are sometimes the ones that hurt us most. But that’s okay I still keep showing up and keep forgiving, saying I’m sorry because I have hurt others as well. We need more I’m sorry, I forgive you, I love you. Which is another beautiful song you sing.

Ultimate liberation means being free to do whatever you want in the bedroom? I think my wife would strongly oppose that sentiment. If I followed that logic, wouldn't I be the one "hurting" my wife and kids? I.e. we instinctually know "laws"/parameters can be for our good.

I remember when DW was a Vanguard for the Truth, the SOLA's and the Pauline letters. And then there were some 'intellectual wanderings,' and then his marriage fell apart. And now this. As a longtime fan since the first CC albums and coffee shop performances, this saddens me. Derek, you are lost and are being blinded by your enemy. Come home and remember. We say this out of love, my friend. If you want to minister to the LGBTQ crowd who are out of the faith, then do so. But don't justify that this is all okay for God's people and that Scripture is okay with it. And if that's what you feel, then just detach yourself from the faith altogether and stop trying to straddle two incompatible worldviews. I'll pray for you, brother. "I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people- not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler-not even to eat with such a one. For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church[b] whom you are to judge? 13God judges[c] those outside. "Purge the evil person from among you."

Lemme start by sayin' that I love you Maybe even more than before I know your face but now I see more of you So much beauty just behind the door You invited me in Believe it or not, the hardest is behind you Saying who you are and what you need out loud But this great gift, it's always gonna haunt you Like a good ghost pulling you from the crowd To places you have never been Where sometimes boys will be girls Sometimes armor will be pearls What you put on oh, it shows the world how hard you're fighting Brother, sometimes boys will be girls You know, they say the greatest revenge is a life well lived So the loudest fuck you and greatest gift that you could ever give They are one and the same 'Cause sometimes boys will be girls Sometimes armor will be pearls What you put on oh, it shows the world how hard you're fighting Sister, sometimes boys will be girls Oh, boys will be girls I heard Jesus loved and spent his life with those who Were abandoned by proud and fearful men So if a church won't celebrate and love you They're believing lies that can't save you or them 'Cause you're so beautiful by any name

❤❤❤ Hey Paul, it's not that I don't believe your story That you saw the lord appearing in all his glory You fell down at his feet in the middle of the street And then you couldn't see for a week But say Paul, I wonder would it scandalize you If you saw how everyone has canonized you How every word you said was on god's own letterhead And his spirit was caught in your throat Now every Pharisee must die eventually By every word that you wrote, Paul But hey Paul, brother don't misunderstand me After all, we're so alike that it's uncanny We've said so many words about a man we only heard about But we've never seen his face And we're both running from the men that we'd become Before we changed our names, Paul You're still killing us, Paul You're still killing us, Paul You're still killing us So hey Paul, if you could see would you regret it How the law made you see yourself as wretched Would it break your heart to know that your church won't marry folks Whose love it sees as a thorn Because maybe you never knew that Jesus was loving you Exactly the way you were born, Paul You're still killing us, Paul (Maybe it breaks your heart) You're still killing us, Paul (Brother, do you hear us crying out) You're still killing us

I loved the quote you put at the beginning "If you claim to be someone's ally but aren't getting hit by the stones being thrown at them, you aren't standing close enough." I think it totally fit the song and it is so true. I also loved the verse, "If a church won't celebrate and love you, they are believing lies that can't save you or them" That's also true, but it is also good to remember, not all churches are like that. Some are affirming and I believe God is affirming. I love you. I loved what you created

@@derekwebb Well, I didn't actually listen to the song here. Real talk for a moment, I love the original Bus Driver song, primarily for the tavern-style piano playing under the singing. There aren't enough good piano songs in CCM, and when I heard this was played on guitar, it just didn't hold my interest as much. No, the gender of the bus driver isn't important to the message of the song, and if the driver is gender dysphoric, then he needs to get psychological counseling. But your antics at the Dove awards and supporting a so-called Christian "drag queen" (and drag queens are currently trying to groom children into sexual relationships), it behooves us not to support that kind of behavior but to oppose it for the degeneracy it is. Kids deserve better, and if we want to love the gender dysphoric as Jesus loves, then we need to get them proper counseling, not to enable them in their delusions.

Wonderful, thoughtfully, honest, holy. Love your lyrics Derek. There are many of us working through our decondtruction/reconstruction of faith or whatever you wanna call it. The voice of honest hearts and minds will keep humanity forward and also attract our own makers ears. I still put my trust in Jesus and what he did for humanity but I cant embrace the theology of hell. I struggle with attending my own church because of leaders standing against people in gay-relations and membership in our church. I grew up in an evangelical church here in Stockholm, now 38 years old. I have deconstructed a lot through the past 4 years. Now I have two teenagers that recently experienced the love of Christ and chose to be baptized. I did not do any to make that happen, while these things have happened Ive been in times of deep dissappointment in what i believed all my life😅. I put my trust in a Loving God that still seeks people up, I believe that through experience. Im still afraid of hell which is really fucked up actually but sadly the effect of leaders in my youth scaring me about sexual sin and such. With that said! I really have appreciated a lot of your music through the years. Both the music from caedmons call but also your own songs that so honestly pours out your heart and thoughts. Gorgeous. This brings up so many strong emotions and memories from the past life before social media, when we were all more connected. I've told people for two decades that "words aren't remembered, but presence is." I've sat on curbs with people and stood in the cold, found out the quiet moments, because at some point I realized that, if you love people, why talk about it when you can do it? Showing up for people before you talk yourself out of it is something that I've been able to do in part thanks to decades of your music, and thank you for helping to make me a more loving person.
